Women for Women

Started by curiosity after reading Bill Clinton's book "Giving", I opened this website, womenforwomen.org. In the book it says this organization founded by Zainab Salbi, the author of Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam and The Other Side of War: Women’s Stories of Survival & Hope, focuses on helping women from conflict areas and bringing them from victims to survivors to active citizens.

If I quote from the website, it says: "Ms.Salbi inspires and moves audiences with the passion of her personal experience as a survivor of war and her dedication to rebuilding communities after war, one woman at a time".

The moment I opened the website, I was stunned by Ms.Salbi's dedication. It made me realized that out of every war, the most victims are women and children. Women are killed, mutilated, and raped, often by a gang and in some occasions are being raped and watched by their own children. After the rape many of them are infected by HIV and are socially isolated. Watching the videos in the website, it made me feel as if I am the most ignorant person in the world that I did not think of this before. :(

Women for Women International sponsorship system allows women all over the world who would like to help to sponsor their sister in the area of war or post-war. Being a sponsor means one donates $27 monthly to fund one's sister as well as providing an emotional support by exchanging letters with her sister. This sponsorship is a one-on-one program between the sponsor and the participant (the survivor of war, that is).

Here is an embedded video of field report from the DR Congo conflict area:

They also have their Notes from the Field Blog and the Get Involved Blog, if you wish to follow their activities.

Whilst being a sponsor takes a bit of commitment maybe we as bloggers can at least spread the word by putting Women for Women logo on our blog by copying and pasting the following HTML code into our site:
